Fail Fandom Anon Rules Post:

In essence, we may be assholes but we aren't that kind of asshole. Respect the flock, respect other human beings and respect yourselves. FFA can be a painfully earnest community, we consider it a feature. FFA discussion covers a wide variety of topics and has a very flexible view of 'fandom' that includes politics, current events, and cooking techniques.

FFA is a Choose NOT to Warn experience.

Main Rules:

  • No pictures, real names, no detailed locations.

  • Religion or lack thereof is off topic on the main meme.

  • Fatwank and eating disorders are banned

  • Telling people to kill themselves is not cool

  • Try to name your threads

  • No embeds. Of any kind. Ever. This includes embed links.

  • No Rick Rolling. If you say a link has fluffy kittens, the link should have fluffy kittens. If you say a link has gore, the link should have gore. No bait-and-switch with links.

  • No underage porn

  • No direct download links to media under copyright. It is an LJ TOS violation. You can tell people where to go, but you cannot post the direct link.

  • Deliberate un-anon comments will be deleted - only two exceptions: limited promotional posts, and on a limtied basis, a logged in response by someone who is the topic of conversation.

  • On Notice: certain known wanky and wank bait topics are not banned, but are automatically on notice and subject to more intense moderation. This includes eating disorders, trans* topics, some countrywank, and anything else that tends to explode with trolls.

  • p.m. the mod account or put 'hey mods' in the topic if something needs attention

Rules About Specific Topics:

  • Andrew Blake/Thanfiction: The person known as Amy Player, Victoria Bitter, Jordan Wood, Andrew Blake, Thanfiction, and several other names should be referred to using male pronouns,  Arguing over his gender identity, or if he meets a certain definition of trans distracts from the real issue, which is that he's a manipulative lying asshole.

  • Promotional Activity: Moderators of other anon memes, or of other communities may make LOGGED IN/NON ANON promotional notices to the meme. No more than one comment per community per post. FFA likes to be informed of things that are relevant to our interests.

  • Talk to the Mods: If you have an issue with being outed, or with something that does not need immediate attention via a 'hey mods', you can leave it as a comment on this post. The comments are and will remain screened. Embeds, pagebreaks, and blatant trolling should get a 'hey mods' on the current post. You can also PM members of the mod team.

  • Banhammering: The mod team will ban individuals from FFA upon request. Once banned, it is impossible to make a logged in comment on FFA. The ban is a permanent form of anonfail prevention, and not a punishment. If you would like to be banned, leave a comment on this post. It will remain screened.

  • Livejournal vs. Dreamwidth: Platformwank, specifically Livejournal vs. Dreamwidth wank is permanently banned.

  • You can leave suggestions here as well.

Friends Lock Guidelines:

Generally speaking- respect the friends lock. We aren’t that kind of asshole.

• If it was posted unlocked, and later locked? Go ahead and post the caps, discuss.
• If it was posted locked to a large open membership community, where anyone can join by clicking the button? Go ahead and post the caps, discuss.
• If it was posted locked and never unlocked? Don't post it.
• If it was posted locked to a small or selective membership community? Don't post it.
Recaps are allowed with discretion. Some guiding examples:
• "Sunnycamehome2u keeps making locked posts about how the lurkers support her in email" - OK
• "Probably 20 people on my friends list have made locked posts talking about how Sunnycamehome2u's inability to spell pisses them off" - OK.
• "Sunnycamehome2u made a locked post with xxxxxxx text, and lj user a, b, c, d all commented. Plus her grandmother is dying, she's living in a van down by the river, and her cat tried to make love to her iphone"- NOT ok.

Other posts and resources relevant to your interests:

Personal Issues and Everything Else:

The personal post is for anything that doesn't fit the meme's loose definition of fandom. It is especially good for
problems that affect you on an individual level. Relationships, mental health issues, even that weird skin reaction you get to strawberries are perfect for the personal post.  Religion is an acceptable topic, and body issues are also acceptable within reason. If you feel the topic is something that the wider meme should view, post to the personal post, and post a link to it on the main meme.

Fic Post:
Sometimes the Gentle Failers like to write fic for each other. This is a central place to post it: http://fail_fandomanon.livejournal.com/6498.html

Subject Line Coding:
Livejournal did some things that took the subject lines away from posts. sunnyspringhome did some things to put them back. Information here: http://fail_fandomanon.livejournal.com/25451.html

Backup Meme:
LJ is known for its robust servers that never ever collapse. If LJ is down, or something happens to the community, there is a back up FFA on Dreamwidth.  Backup Meme: http://fail_fandomanon.dreamwidth.org

Fail Fandom Anon Wiki:
FFA has a wiki, updated and maintained by an enterprising set of Nonnies. Everything you have ever wanted to know about the meme, the conversations, the conventions, and the things that are relevant to our interests is housed there. Fail_Fandom Anon Wiki: http://failfandomanonwiki.pbworks.com

If you do want to use spoiler text, the code is: <lj-spoiler text="what the spoilery text is about"> your spoilery text </lj-spoiler>

CTSC means "comment to see comments". For more info, see this page on the wiki.

Re. point #3:

2012-07-08 10:30 pm (UTC)

Are we talking "no ED wank", or would the mods prefer no talking about ED issues at all on the main post, with or without the appropriate warning? As an ED!nonnie, I can roll with either, but I'd like to know what's being gotten at officially there.

No ED wank on either post. ED, as specifically related to a character or fandom property is allowed on the main meme, within reason.

ED discussion on the personal post is more flexible.

I know meme has had issues with people asking for medical advice - should there be a note, in either the rules or the new Personal+ post, that meme is not a doctor and so on?

The meme is not a doctor, or The Doctor.

2012-07-08 11:28 pm (UTC)

Eh, anarchy is over rated. And features a whole lot of page breaks.

On the "try to name your threads," could a note be made to try and not change the subject lines, either? That always causes a mini-kerfuffle whenever it happens.

No. While leaving the subject line alone is the polite thing to do, it is not a required rule.

The FFA mod team is not going to try an enforce the issue of subject lines. As such, we cannot make a rule about it.

Confused nonny is confused.

The fic post is on the list of retired posts, but it's also promoted as its own post for us to write fic for each other. Which is it supposed to fall under?

We will update it.

Is the old personal post closed now?

No. You can use the new or the old one. We are not going to 'close' it. However, new post with new links goes up in about 800 comments. You may want to use the new personal post.

I know we're a choose not to warn experience, but would you guys consider adding a line like "If you do want to use spoiler text, here's how: <lj-spoiler text="what the spoilery text is about"> your spoilery text </lj-spoiler>" at the end of header text for numbered posts?

Brain fogged perimenopausal nonnie needs help

2012-07-19 05:54 pm (UTC)

So if we want to not anonfail, which I've done a few times likely due to the fog, we can leave a comment here asking to be banhammered? And I just leave said request post here under my username?

Do you know if this will cause the 'ctsc' problem?

This seems too easy to me, but also great.

Re: Brain fogged perimenopausal nonnie needs help

2012-07-19 08:07 pm (UTC)

No, you can still meme while logged in, no need to log out (which causes the ctsc problem). You just won't be able to post a comment with your lj name and will need to press the more "options..." button and select "anonymous" in the menu to comment on the next page.

Question about comm mods posting unanon.

2012-07-24 08:22 pm (UTC)

Hi mods,

Since someone brought it up, does the "No more than one comment per community per post" rule really mean no more than one thread per post or no more than one actual comment? Thanks!

Re: Question about comm mods posting unanon.

2012-07-24 09:46 pm (UTC)

One thread. You can reply to inquiries and such in the thread.

The idea is that we don't want someone posting a new ad on everypage of everypost.
Answer what you want in the thread, and if it is a prob lem we will let you know.

Hi Sunny's, I just wanted to check on a comment that seems to have been deleted. Did I break a rule with this comment that I'm unaware of? The comment is the middle comment of this screen cap (http://i47.tinypic.com/vzez55.jpg). Thank you!

You were fine. I was deleting commens looking for an embed. You were collateral damge. Sorry

I have a question on sock puppets.

Particularly, what's the attitude toward them here? On another anon meme I play around on, there are a few socks that are shared meme-wide; the passwords are made public to the meme, and anyone who wants to avoid captcha is able to use them.

Is that something we might be able to implement here? Especially since new posts go up at 5k anyway, it seems like allowing socks would get rid of a lot of the inaccessibility bullshit that this captcha brings up.

Hi Nonny-

Generally speaking, sock puppets and any logged in posting is a big no. We have limited exceptions for Mods, certain characters, and announcements of other memes or fic challengs.

FFA has several thousand anons. The is NO way shared socks would end well. They are also a MASSIVE TOS violation.

I am sorry that captcha anoys you, but it prevents spam and serves as a double check that the person posting is not logged in.

Re: LJ is being stupid, not sure I should request banning

2013-02-17 01:28 am (UTC)

Yes, you can still read the comm logged in, but after you're banned when you try to post logged in with that username it'll tell you "you have been banned from commenting" -- basically it forces you to use the pulldown menu to pick the Anonymous option before you can successfully post a comment.

Re: May I have permission to post unanon for something?

2013-02-17 03:44 am (UTC)

You may post an unanon comment to give the link- or you can post anon, signing the comment and giving the link.

Please make all responses anon (but you can totally sign them as you)

MODS (not sure if this needs deleting but its existence annoys me)

French pornspam complete with coding fail. In #199, which is why I'm pointing it out here.

The coding fail is the most irritating part. Get it right, bots!

It totally needed deleting, and I have done so.

Personal Post link

2013-06-03 01:00 pm (UTC)

The Personal Post link on this page leads to the first Personal Post. Could you please add a link to the current Personal Post as well?

The mods are awesome. Keep up the great work.

Re: Personal Post link

2013-06-03 01:16 pm (UTC)

Fixed now -

Um, a comment I tried to leave just got marked as spam - is it a glitch or did I do something wrong?

Ooooookay, there are 15 suspicious comments, I'll check them out.

I tried to post in the fic recs thread (twice) and it said my comments were marked as spam.

I just "unspammed" 15 comments. I don't know how that happened since the ticky box for spam protection in the comm's settings (privacy tab) IS NOT CHECKED. ¿?

(make that 17 comments, all with links)

Re: Screening of a thread, PMs to mod not answered :(

2013-06-12 11:09 pm (UTC)

Hey there. I'm sorry for the lag; I think only one of us gets notifications from the mod account and if LJ is borked or something, those could get lost or delayed. I don't know what happened, but I just screened that thread. My sympathies, nonny. <3

IS this where we report these things?

2013-09-16 06:25 pm (UTC)

Re: IS this where we report these things?

2013-09-16 06:35 pm (UTC)

Thank you, nonny. That was really troubling, and I screened it.

a suggestion

2013-09-18 11:34 pm (UTC)

After the latest comment about trigger warnings, I noticed that the statement that meme is CNTW is only on the rules post and not in the header info that goes at the beginning of every post. It seems like we're getting a lot of newbies lately, and some of them may not have read all the rules. Maybe the CNTW should be in the header info so it's harder to miss?

Thanks for all your hard work!

Thanks, nonnie. That is a good suggestion and I've made the change in the header.

old link in new post

2013-11-20 11:20 am (UTC)

The link to "previous post" in the new Personal etc post points to personal etc post two. It should be http://fail-fandomanon.livejournal.com/55021.html/

Would it be an idea to have links to all the P-etc posts?

Re: old link in new post

2013-11-20 11:26 am (UTC)

Thanks, I'll correct this. :)

request to have comment deleted

2014-01-19 08:47 pm (UTC)

Hi mods.

I made the comment here http://fail-fandomanon.livejournal.com/76574.html?thread=364654622#t364654622 yesterday and I think the anon who replied to me was right: it is very identifying. I realize that it's not a wanky thread or anything, but in retrospect I realize it would be awful for the author to come across it. I was out of line to make it so specific. Can you please delete or screen that comment? (The rest of the sibling/child comments are fine, they don't go into detail.)

Thanks. I appreciate it.

Re: request to have comment deleted

2014-01-19 11:13 pm (UTC)

Done, and I hope you're feeling better today, nonny.

On the precise line with the Astolat thing...

2014-01-21 08:20 am (UTC)

So last post there was a thing that got axed for involving name-outing, where the original comment said something like, "Good job, you've discovered the astolat-patrol summoning spell," and someone replied asking, "How is she involved?"

I'm curious, would the original "astolat-patrol" comment have been okay if all the replies to the question had been more vague? Like, "Let's just say she's its number one fan. In all senses," which was what I was going to reply until I saw everybody else had gotten way more specific? Or even "We can't tell you directly here, I'm afraid, although if you look, the answer is out there." (Doing a google search just now, omg it really is. Like, jesus girl, clean your own house before you go knocking anybody else.)

Re: On the precise line with the Astolat thing...

2014-01-21 07:09 pm (UTC)

Hi anon, I was the mod who screened the comments in that thread, though I also ran it past the other mods later to check what they thought. Speaking just for my own opinion here, I wouldn't have screened any of the comments in that thread if the replies had been as vague as your examples above.

Would it be possible to provide a neutral version of the spoiler code for those of us who use mobile devices, like just:

The editing of the current one on phone is pretty complicated, so I often end up going with not using the code.

Would this work?

Basic version: <lj-spoiler>your spoilery text</lj-spoiler> produces this: [Spoiler (click to open)]your spoilery text

or do you prefer this:

Basic version: <lj-spoiler text="spoilers">your spoilery text</lj-spoiler> produces this: [spoilers]your spoilery text

ETA: added the first one to posts 301 & 302.
